Date: Sat Mar 24, 2001 7:08am Hello, I had an allergic reaction to Wellbutrin which was prescribed for smoking cessation. It did seem to help the cause but then I broke out in hives after 2 weeks. I found your site during my search with my most recent problem with Prozac. I was drug tested at my place of employment ( I am a medical lab tech). I was told it was positive for methamphetamine at a level of 283ng/ml. I did not use any methamphetamine but lost my job because of the result. Since then I have been searching everywhere and everything trying to find info on my behalf. I feel it was a cross-reaction which caused a false positive. I found much information after finding your site. That prozac is like Ecstasy or MDMA. Also much information that I was not aware of. I had quit using Prozac shortly after I was fired because I thought they would figure out the false positive issue and if retested I didn't want another positive because of it. I did not have any side affects from stopping the use of Prozac however so I quess I am lucky. Thanks, Kathy Date: Sat Mar 24, 2001 4:04pm Response1: Hi Kathy, how long were you on the Prozac? And yes, I would consider you were lucky, now that you know all this about these drugs. Hopefully you won't take them again, the brain damage they cause can be permanent. I took Prozac only 15 days and 9 months later I still have problems. Please stick around here and ask as many questions as you want, we would not want you to take another drug. So sorry about your job, I think that yes it could have been the Prozac, and the Prozac can show up in your body for months, as it has a long half life... Take care, Cynthia Date: Sat Mar 24, 2001 9:25pm Response2: Hi Kathy, That's a very interesting story you are telling us. As you already know, methamphetamine is a part of the chemical structure in Ecstasy (MDMA), 3/4-methylene-dioxy-methamphetamine. Methamphetamine releases high levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. It is neurotoxic to the brain, damaging dopamine and serotonin neuron cell-endings. Now here comes my question: how on earth could Prozac (fluoxetine) causes elevetad levels of methamphetamine in your blood ? I am going to do some research on this. Thanks for sharing and so sorry to hear that you lost your job because of this. Charly Date: Sun Mar 25, 2001 4:03am Response3: I flunked the whiz quiz too. That was back in 1994 and it was a pre-employment test for the Postal Service. I freaked since I wasn't using any illegal drugs and had told them I was on Prozac and Valium. They said if I brought in a letter from the Dr. stating that I was on these meds and come back for another test, that they would reconsider. About a month later I got a letter from them and was approved for employment. Sorry I can't remember the details. But I can remember that I didn't want this on any government type record. Recently two kids were charged with heroin possession. The lab tests came back positive the first 2 times the substance was tested. The kids thought it was heroin. It was tested again at a different lab, the results were negative and the charges have been dropped. Weird world we live in, Nina Date: Mon Mar 26, 2001 6:04am Response4: Feel free to post this and share the information. It is not uncommon for the SSRIs to test positive as methamphetamine. Those reports have come in for ten years now. I recently had a boy who was on Celexa who tested positive for amphetamines and his doctor told him that he would "expect" that result. So a few of the docs are aware of this. Dr. Tracy
